Social Events

In addition to the Tuesday banquet, we have three optional events for ASYNC 2007 participants, at modest extra costs. A very special dinner Monday evening at Chez Panisse is available for up to 16 lucky participants. On Thursday morning, you have your choice of golf at the 18-hole "Tilden Park" course in Berkeley or a trip to Alcatraz followed by dim sum. Details and costs are listed below. Space is limited, so make your reservations promptly!

MONDAY 12 MARCH - Dinner at Chez Panisse

Chez Panisse
1517 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley,
California 94709

(This event is full)

The renowned restaurant Chez Panisse was started in 1971 by Alice Waters and an assortment of idealistic friends. Alice and friends prepare and serve organically grown food, harvested in ways that are ecologically sound, by people who take care of the land for future generations. They strive for local short paths between table and food: vegetables just out of the garden, fruit right off the branch, and fish straight out of the sea. In doing so, Chez Panisse has stitched together a patchwork of over sixty nearby suppliers, whose concerns, like the restaurant's, are environmental harmony and optimal flavor. Chez Panisse is located 9 blocks north from the University campus, at a digestive walk distance or short drive from Hotel Durant.

Monday night menus are generally simpler and more rustic or regional than what the restaurant serves on other evenings. To get the flavor, the current month Monday night menus are posted at: http://www.chezpanisse.com/pgmonday.html

We will try to reserve up to 4 tables (reserving more may not be possible) for Monday night's second seating, starting 8:00 PM. Each table accommodates 4 people; please feel free to make table arrangements with others to occupy a 4-person table. The food is $50/person, wine prices vary (the February menu shows $25 per bottle and $45 per magnum) - count on 15% tip and 8% tax. You can pay directly at the restaurant on Monday evening. We would like each table of 4 to pay separately.

Tables fill up very quickly, and we need to make reservations as early as February 12 to guarantee (any of) the tables. Reservations can be cancelled up to 8 March; after that there is a penalty of $25. per person.

THURSDAY 15 MARCH - Alcatraz and Dim Sum

A Thursday morning visit to the world famous Alcatraz prison is followed by Dim Sum at the "City View” restaurant. You will embark at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero near Fisherman’s wharf at 9:30 for a short ferry ride over San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz. You’ll get a good view of San Francisco from the water.

Originally built by the US Army as a military prison, Alcatraz operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. It is now part of the National Park Service. You will see the prison, buy souvenirs and, we hope, return to shore still free.

Following the Alcatraz tour we’ll have Dim Sum for lunch at the "City View" restaurant (http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/892445) in San Francisco’s Chinatown, the largest Chinese community outside Asia. There will be plenty of time to relax and catch up with old friends and the new friends you’ve made at ASYNC 2007. You will end in one of the most interesting parts of San Francisco. Exploration by foot after lunch is highly recommended.

Transportation:

Pier 33 is approximately one mile from the nearest BART station, Embarcadero. Street car line F runs along the Embarcadero at regular intervals, or if there’s time and nice weather it’s a pleasant walk. Be sure to take comfortable shoes and warm clothing; San Francisco can be cold and foggy and it may be windy on the Bay.

Departure time for the ASYNC2007 tour is set for 9:30 (first boat - we can have 60 people per boat). Tours last 2 to 2-1/2 hours. Boats return every half hour. Ticket prices are as follows:

  • $21.75 Adult (over 11 - 61)
  • $20.00 Senior (62 +)
  • $13.50 Children 5-11
  • Free Children under 5

Lunch will cost $20 in addition per adult over 11 and $10 for children 5-11. We will be collecting payment upon on-site conference registration. We can make adjustments for the final headcount until February 21, but we need to pre-pay the tour company (and so need an approximate headcount) by February 14.

Please email the 'ASYNC 2007 Social Event Form' to Yaeko Hirotsuka  (yaeko.hirotsuka@sun.com) with the subject “ASYNC Social Events Form” or fax it to her at: (650) 786-6010 to reserve your place for this event, Let Yaeko know the number and type of tickets you would like to reserve for Alcatraz and confirm whether or not you will be joining us for lunch. PLEASE DO SO BY FEBRUARY 14.
