The Growing Importance of E-Business Technology and Applications
E-Business technologies, processes, applications and services provide the foundations
for both the physical and digital economies. Despite years of E-business experience and evolution,
enabling technologies and complex, large-scale solutions
(Business to Consumer, Business to Business, Business to Employee, Peer-to-Peer, Social Network to Social Network)
continue to pose many tough challenges to both industry adopters, individual users, solution providers and the research community.
Examples of current and emerging challenges range from
the reliable integration of e-service platforms and applications,
to secure and trustworthy interactions, to new paradigms for user experience and interaction,
to capturing and mining massive amounts of on-line supplier, user and community information
in both numeric and text formats, to discovering and exploiting new market,
trade and pricing mechanisms for competitive advantage.
Many of these challenges can only be overcome through cross fertilization of methods and solutions
across disciplines such as databases, software engineering & architecture, networking,
resource virtualization & grid computing, security, privacy & trust, data mining & machine intelligence,
information systems management, computational market mechanisms, service management, and service engineering.
Meeting these challenges also requires intensive interaction between industry experts
applying E-business solutions in real-world practice, and researchers developing new
E-business enabling concepts, methods, building blocks, and experimental systems.
The 2008 IEEE International Conference on E-Business Engineering (ICEBE 2008)
Since the initial IEEE sponsored International Conference on E-Business Engineering in 2004,
the conference and its related community of supporters has continued to grow.
This is because this conference meets a distinctive need, focusing on
E-business technology and application related problems, research and solutions from both academic and industry perspectives.
Neither the main academically focused computer science research conferences,
nor the business school oriented Information Systems Management research conferences have the same clarity of focus
on the engineering and application of e-business systems.
Since its inception, the ICEBE has been sponsored by
the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on E-Commerce (http://tab.computer.org/tcec/).
The sponsorship from the IEEE TCEC has substantially helped the ICEBE to increase its visibility, recognition and impact.
While ICEBE is truly an international conference,
the conference steering committee has strategically decided to site the conference in Greater China,
with some of the very top tier research universities providing the location for the conference
(Tsinghua University, Fudan University, University of Hong Kong, and now Xi'an Jiaotong University).
This has given participants from outside of China the opportunity to have
first hand experience with the explosion of E-business related
technology and application development in both academia and industry in Greater China.
It has also provided the opportunity for researchers and leading industry practitioners across Greater China
to meet one another, and to share their work with an international audience.
In previous years, the ICEBE has been held together with
Workshop on Service-Oriented Applications, Integration and Collaboration,
Workshop on Service-Oriented System Engineering,
Workshop on Service-Oriented Knowledge Management,
and Student Workshop: e-Business Technologies for Real-World Problems.
This year, ICEBE 2008 will be held together with several related workshops.
All paper will be peer reviewed and accepted papers will be published
in the conference proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society,
indexed through INSPEC
and automatically included in the IEEE Digital Library.
