Workshop on Data and Knowledge Engineering for E-service and E-business (DKEEE'08)
(October 22-24, 2008, Xi'An, China, in conjunction with ICEBE 2008)

The strategic electronic capabilities of E-business rely on automatic information systems centred on efficient and flexible data processing, which continues to constitute a big challenge in E-business. The challenge is to overcome the barriers due to the ever increasing data amount, the heterogeneous or conflicting data representations, and the new data processing requirements in various business processes spanning the entire value chain in E-business. The computing paradigm of SOA, heralded as the answer for inflexible information system architecture, promises to reduce some of the processing and operation barriers in integrated business process of E-business. Meanwhile, it introduces more complexity to the task on the behavioural aspect during business interaction.

Examples of current and emerging challenges range from data intensive business applications and data stream applications, to business activity monitoring for insightful understanding of the business behaviour; to business event processing in support of flexible and adaptive business processes, to inter-enterprise data exchange for business transactions by XML Web services, to enterprise data management, to services data and metadata management, and to process and analysis of data on SOA performance and quality of service. Many of these challenges can only be tackled through inter-disciplinary efforts on designing, developing, applying and validating techniques and methodologies from database, machine learning, distributed systems, and service science and engineering.

This workshop aims to call for such inter-disciplinary efforts and also to provide an international forum for researchers, educators, practitioners and policy-makers from academia, industry, governments and organizations to discuss and present their ideas and development in foundations and application of data and knowledge engineering in relate to E-business and E-service. We seek paper submissions on all topics related to advances of data and knowledge engineering for e-business and e-services, including but not limited to:

  1. Data and knowledge engineering foundations
    • Data mining
    • Stream processing and continuous queries
  2. E-business management
    • Business activity and process monitoring
    • Business data modelling and management
    • Business event processing
    • Business intelligence
  3. E-service
    • Service data and metadata management
    • Service oriented sensor data processing
    • SOA performance and quality of service
    • SOA and information / knowledge sharing
    • Web services workflow
Papers must be submitted electronically. The format of submitted papers should follow the guidelines for the IEEE conference proceedings, limited to 6 pages. All papers will be peer reviewed by at least three reviewers. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings of the ICEBE 2008 by the IEEE CS Press.
