About
Washington DC
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_D.C.)
Washington, D.C. is
the capital of
the United States, named in honor of George Washington, the nation's
first president. The District is located on the north bank of the
Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland.
The city has a resident population of 599,657; because of commuters
from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million
during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the
District is a part, has a population of 5.4 million, the eighth-largest
metropolitan area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the US federal government are
located in the District, as are many of the nation's monuments and
museums. Washington, D.C. hosts 174 foreign embassies as well as the
headquarters of many organizations such as the World Bank and trade
unions.
Six of the top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects'
2007 ranking of "America's Favorite Architecture" are located in DC:
the White House, the Washington National Cathedral, the Thomas
Jefferson Memorial, the United States Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial,
and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The National Mall is a large, open park area in the center of the city.
Located in the Mall include the Washington Monument and the Jefferson
Pier, the Lincoln Memorial, the National World War II
Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam
Veterans
Memorial, and the National Archives houses. Mostly visited museums and
galleries in the Mall include the National Museum of Natural History,
the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American
History, the Arts and Industries Building, and the Smithsonian
Institution Building (also known as "The Castle"). The National Gallery
of Art is also located on the National Mall, which is wholly
owned
by the U.S. government.
