Workshop

1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on XR + AI Integration for Healthcare Applications

in conjunction with IEEE/ACM CHASE 2022 on November 19, 2022, in Washington, D.C.

Integration of extended reality (XR), which includes AR, VR, and MR, and artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to accomplish three key goals of the healthcare sector (i.e., to improve care experiences, patient satisfaction, healthcare provider productivity, and cost effectiveness) by supplementing human intelligence with machines to help healthcare providers take in situational information anchored to actual care settings or patient conditions. To engineers and scientists, such integration may come in the form of “AI-enhanced XR” with smart spatial-sensing and data-processing capabilities, or “XR-supported AI” that uses AR/VR interfaces to facilitate AI systems’ development and operation. Both forms are currently at an early stage of research. For healthcare professionals, it is important to understand the enhanced capabilities (and limitations) of the forthcoming XR + AI integration in order to inform the design of these novel applications; the design process should consider how the XR + AI integration will fit with and support enhanced clinical workflows, requiring collaboration and co-design between engineers, scientists and healthcare providers. This interdisciplinary workshop encourages the attendance of interested engineers and scientists who seek XR + AI integration for healthcare applications, and healthcare providers who want to share their application ideas and identify collaborators.

Our 1st cross-cutting, cross-disciplinary workshop aims to bring researchers and practitioners in AR/VR/MR, AI, and healthcare together to share conceptual ideas, problems, methods, technologies, and findings on topics that include, but are not limited to: .

  • AI methods and technologies that can apply for the enhancement of XR
  • XR applications that support, facilitate, or cooperate with AI-driven processes and systems
  • Conceptual ideas, methods, and technologies for the integration of XR and AI
  • Case studies or project demonstrations in healthcare that involve the integration of XR and AI
  • Application ideas in healthcare domain that warrant the integrated use of XR and AI
  • Submission Instructions

For presentation at the workshop, papers in three different types (regular, short, and abstract) of your choice must be submitted and accepted. The submitted regular paper should be no longer than 8 pages, the submitted short paper should be no longer than 5 pages, and the abstract should be no longer than 1 page. The accepted regular and short papers will be published to the ACM digital library (Impact Score 1.23). The submitted paper in PDF must comply with the ACM formatting guideline and the CHASE 2022 conference guidelines for submission. Reduced registration fee will apply to the workshop-only participation.
