V. Rajaraman, PhD(Wisconsin) is Honorary Professor in the Supercomputer Education and Research Centre(SERC) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He was previously TataChem Professor and Chairman of SERC, IISc (1982-1994), IBM Professor of IT at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore (1994-20010), and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at IIT,Kanpur (1966-1982). He was an Assistant Professor of Statistics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1961-62), a visiting Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley (1965-66), and an IBM Research Fellow at the IBM Systems Development Institute, Canberra, Australia (1973-74). He is an author of 23 widely used text books and numerous research papers in computer science and has guided 30 PhD students.

Prof.Rajaraman was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 1998. He is a Fellow of the Computer Society of India, the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences,Indian National Academy of Engineering, and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers. Among the many honours and prizes that he has received are Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1976), Homi Bhabha Prize (1984) by UGC, Indian Society of Technical Education award for excellence in Teaching (1988), Om Prakash Bhasin Prize (1992), Rustom Choksi Award (1993) by IISc, Zaheer Medal (1998) by the Indian National Science Academy, and the Life Time Contributions award by the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Dataquest, Computer Society of India, and the Systems Society of India. He was awarded an Honorary DSc (Engineering) by the Bengal Science and Engineering University, Sibpur in 2012, and an Honorary DSc by IIT/Kanpur in 2014.

Abstract : In this talk I will first review three computing environments used presently, namely, Grid, Volunteer, and Cloud. I will compare these three environments and their unique features. I will then enumerate the problems currently faced by cloud computing users. I argue for a better environment and discuss what it should provide. I conclude the talk by presenting the architecture of a better computing environment called a cooperative cloud.

Dr. Gopal Pingali is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Vice President for Global Technology Services Labs at IBM. In this worldwide leadership role in Global Technology Services Labs he is responsible for driving hybrid cloud solutions for clients and the development of automation, analytics, and cognitive delivery to realize IT as a Service. His team of distinguished engineers, architects, developers, and designers spans the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific. This IT Solutions Development group has been transforming several thousand enterprises around the globe with hybrid cloud and intelligent automation capabilities. Gopal is currently playing this role from Bangalore, India while continuing to have a base in New York.

Gopal obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan; and has published over 65 papers in peer reviewed international conferences and journals, has 50 patents filed or issued. He worked at Bell Labs in New Jersey till 2001 where he pioneered real time video based tracking systems that have now become a standard in sports broadcasts as well as in a variety of customer activity analysis and surveillance systems.

Gopal has been an invited keynote speaker or panelist at forty venues including IEEE Cloud Computing Conferences and workshops, IEEE and ACM Multimedia conferences, IETE National Conferences in India, US Government workshops, and at top Universities such as MIT, Georgia Tech, University of California, Brown University, Indian Institute of Science, and National University of Singapore. Gopal has been chair of various international conferences including being the founding Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing in Emerging Markets and running this annual conference since 2012.

Vivek has over 35 years of experience working in the Indian Government and as an entrepreneur.As the Information Technology & Bio Technology Secretary, Government of Karnataka, he was instrumental in building world-class IT & Biotech institutes and events in Karnataka. During his tenure as IT Secretary, every week Bangalore has seen one new 100% foreign equity firm setting their office. He has been widely quoted in several best sellers as well as newspapers like New York Times,London Times, several European newspapers, FOX TV and a large number of Indian media.

Prior to this, he was the Finance Secretary (Resources) of Karnataka. He was Division Chief Securities & Exchange Board of India, a regulator of Capital markets, and Head of Advisory Services in CRISIL – a rating agency now taken over by S&P. Vivek was the Director as well as Chairman of the Technology Committee on the Board of the Bombay Stock Exchange, the oldest exchange in India.

Vivek is a gold medalist in Bachelor of Engineering from Karnataka University and also an MBA in Finance & Information Systems from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has taught MBA students in various universities in Boston. Vivek is also visiting faculty for finance at the Indian Institute of Science and Defense Institute of Advanced Technologies.

Dr. Mohan holds a Masters and PhD in computer science from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore where he worked as a faculty-scientist for about a decade before moving into the industry. He was a young visiting scientist in the Lab for Computer Science, MIT in 1988 and a visiting scientist in NEC Research Institute, Princeton in the summer of 1994. After leaving IISc, he worked for a number of companies including HP. He pursued his entrepreneurial interests in Bangalore in advanced enterprise software systems for about 7 years before joining Infosys. After a five year stint at Infosys, Dr Mohan founded Pragyan Datalabs focused on BigData algorithms and Analytics in Bengaluru

Building for India's Next Billion

Lalitesh is a pioneer in crowdsourcing and building products for the underserved. His creation, Google Map Maker, tripled the world's digital maps corpus, mapping 2 billion people in 187 countries. The UN and aid agencies have used these user generated maps to assist and rescue millions.

Lalitesh co-founded Google's first international engineering center and retired from Google as Head of India products having invented, led several products including Crowdsourced YouTube Subtitles, Crowdsourced translation corpus, Google Transliteration and Google Finance.

He is now focused on India’s nation building as the founder of Swaja Labs, Indihood, as an architect of Digital India’s Open API and AP Government’s Fiber Grid.

Lalitesh has spoken at TED, the Brookings institute and the Whitehouse on how the internet will revolutionize the lives of the next 5 Billion.

Prior to Google, Lalitesh served on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon where he founded its Lunar Rover program and later founded a robotics startup which became Google’s first acquisition in 2002. Lalitesh received his PhD and MS from CMU in Robotics and Computer Science, has a MS from Design Division, Stanford, as well as a MS in Aerospace, Iowa State and received his B-Tech from IIT-Bombay.

Arun leads a team of world wide experts in hybrid cloud technologies, including orchestration, migration, patterns, automation and analytics. Arun’s goal is to make Enterprise IT as consumable as consumer IT (think Apple).

Prior to joining GTS Labs, Arun was a Director at IBM Research. He led the world wide Commerce Research effort for IBM’s Research Division. His teams worked on multiple aspects of commerce operations from Marketing, to e-Commerce, to Supply Chain, to B2B Integration and solutions for customer service. These solutions heavily leverage big data analytics, predictive analytics, data mining and optimization technologies and deliver value in specific industry contexts.

From 2009 – Jun 2012, Arun had the role of DE and Director in the Business Analytics and Math Sciences Department of IBM Research. In this role Arun led the creation of analytic solutions targeted at multiple industries in support of operations optimization, asset optimization, condition based management, cross agency coordination, safety and security.

Prior to this assignment Arun was on assignment to IBM Global Technology Services from 2008 -2009 as the CTO of Physical Security, where he provided technical direction for development of physical security solutions and services with a focus on smart video surveillance systems. The video analytics and core technology for smart surveillance was originally developed in IBM Research from 2001 to 2006 under Arun’s leadership. Dr Hampapur managed the Exploratory Computer Vision Group at IBM Research from 2003- 2006 and provided direction for several research activities including Biometrics, Video Analytics, Retail Checkout Analytics and video indexing.

He has published more than 80 papers on various topics related to asset optimization, video analysis, pattern recognition, searchable video and video surveillance and holds 60 US patents and more than 100 patent applications.

Dr Hampapur is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, an IBM Master Inventor. Dr Hampapur obtained his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1995. He is a Fellow of the IEEE (class of 2011).

Title : Transactional Hybrid Cloud Cognitive Solutions: Can we use hybrid architectures for real-time transactional applications?
Abstract : Retail e-Com peak loads (Christmas / Diwali / Singles Day) stress the best of on-prem systems with 10-20x peak to off peak loads. Can we use hybrid architectures to support real-time transactions? What does a SaaS retail solution for peak look like? What SLA's are needed? Can we do this over the internet without dedicated pipes between data centers? How do we build fault tolerance into the architecture? The IBM Commerce Research team encountered and invented solutions for all of these questions in the context e-Commerce fulfillment optimization. The solution brought to bear the most advanced big-data techniques, machine learning and combinatorial optimization to solve margin optimization for retail e-Commerce. In this talk, we will look at the industry challenge, the analytics solution and focus on the hybrid architecture that enables this solution.

Dr. Shrutin Ulman is a Medical Graduate with a specialization in Industrial Medicine and Occupational Health (MBBS, DOIH), a PhD is Micro-electronics and an MBA in Marketing. His research experience covers macro-modeling of healthcare based VLSI circuits and modelling fluid flow in cardiac valves. He has worked in the domain of mother and child care focusing on innovations for the emerging markets. He has 6 issued patents in the domain of neonatology covering neonatal jaundice care and management. He has authored several peer reviewed articles and papers, the latest being the paper selected for presentation at the FIGO conference, October 2015, the apex body of Obstetricians and Gynecologists globally. His present assignment at Philips Research India, focuses on regulatory compliance of medical device product development, especially on patient simulators and clinical studies. He is also responsible for facilitating partnerships with the healthcare research local ecosystem.

Prof. Dharanipragada Janakiram did his Ph.D from IIT Delhi and is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India, where he heads and coordinates the research activities of the Distributed and Object Systems Lab. My current research focus is on building large scale software systems focusing on distributed systems espcially cloud and grid computing systems and challenges in big data processing. He is currently the SIG Chair of Distributed Computing of Computer Society of India and also the founder of the Forum for Promotion of Object Technology in India. He is also the founding Chair of ACM Chennai Chapter.

Dr. Dinkar Sitaram completed his Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin Madison. His research interests include scheduling and sustainable resource allocation policies for hybrid clouds and cloud computing, as well as speech recognition and intelligent big data systems.

He has authored 2 books – ‘Moving to the Cloud – Developing Apps in the New World of Cloud Computing’ published by American Elsevier; and ‘Multimedia Servers’ published by Morgan Kaufman. He has authored over 30 patents and 45 publications.

He was awarded the IBM Corporate Innovation Award. He has served as CTO of Novell Software, as CTO of Andiamo Systems and also as CTO of STSD (R&D Wing of HP, India) prior to joining PES University.
