About Berlin

IC2E 2016 Transportation Information

Berlin operates two international airports: Tegel (TXL) which is close to the center of Berlin West and Schönefeld (SXF) which is in the Southeast of Berlin. From there, public transportation will take you to the conference location in approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Alternatively, conference attendees can also fly via Frankfurt airport which is a major international air traffic hub. From there, high speed rail service (ICE trains) brings you to Berlin central station in about 4.5 hours. Or you can choose a connecting flight into Tegel or Schönefeld with flight times slightly above one hour. Train connections can be booked via bahn.de or in the station and leave about every 15 to 20 minutes during the day, flights are mainly operated by Lufthansa or airberlin and depart about every 30 minutes.

Getting to the conference location from Tegel airport (TXL):

Follow the signs towards terminal A/B (or leave it through the main entrance if your flight arrived there). There are several bus lines that depart directly in front of that exit.

  • TXL (destination: S+U Alexanderplatz): Take this line if your hotel is in Berlin Mitte or east Berlin (Brandenburger Tor, Alexanderplatz). Stops of this line.
  • X9 (destination: S+U Zoologischer Garten): Take this line if your hotel is close to the conference location (TU campus) or Zoologischer Garten. Stops of this line.
  • 109 (destination: S+U Zoologischer Garten): Take this line if your hotel is on Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm), in west Charlottenburg, or close to Zoologischer Garten. Stops of this line.

If you are directly going to the conference location, take the X9 bus and get off at Ernst-Reuter-Platz. Check-out the campus plan of TU Berlin for walking directions from there. Workshops and tutorials (and registration on Mon/Fri) will be in the MAR building. The main conference will be in the H building.

For either bus option, you will need a single ticket for zones AB (2.70€) which you can buy from the bus driver (cash only).

Getting to the conference location from Schönefeld airport (SXF):

Follow the signs to the airport station. There, you can take any train towards the Berlin center. The fastest option is to take RE7 or RB14 which will stop at Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplaz, Friedrichstraße, Hauptbahnhof (central station), and Zoologischer Garten (overview of train connections from/to SXF) where you can then connect to S and U trains (see below for some details on this).

If you are going to the conference venue, get off at Zoologischer Garten and follow the S sign (white S in a green circle). Take any east-bound train (with stops at Friedrichstraße) and get off at the next station (Tiergarten). Check-out the campus plan of TU Berlin for walking directions from there. Workshops and tutorials (and registration on Mon/Fri) will be in the MAR building. The main conference will be in the H building.

For this train ride, you will need a single ticket for zones ABC (3.30€) which you can buy on the train platforms. Please, do not forget to validate the ticket prior to enterin the train (there is a stamping machine next to each ticket vending machine).

Getting to the conference location from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof):

Follow the signs to the S trains (white S in a green circle). Take any westbound train (destinations: Spandau, Potsdam, Westkreuz, Charlottenburg) to Tiergarten station. Check-out the campus plan of TU Berlin for walking directions from there. Workshops and tutorials (and registration on Mon/Fri) will be in the MAR building. The main conference will be in the H building.

For this train ride, you will need a short trip ticket (1.70€) which you can buy on the train platform. Please, do not forget to validate the ticket prior to enterin the train (there is a stamping machine next to each ticket vending machine).

General information on public transport in Berlin:

Berlin has an excellent public transportation system comprising buses, light rail (Tram), subway (U) and local trains (S). Connection information is available on the BVG website.

  • Bus/Tram: If you want to use buses or tram, best find out about your connections through the journey planner on the BVG website. You can buy your (already validated ticket) on the Bus/Tram either from the driver or a vending machine in the middle. Please, note that you have to pay in cash (preferably coins).
  • Local trains (S): These trains are typically the fastest way to get around. Simply follow the S sign (white S on green cirle). Within the city center, there are four main lines (see also the routemap). The Ringbahn (S41, S42) follows the circle around the city center, one going clock-wise the other going counter clock-wise. The East-West line (S5, S7, S75) connects Westkreuz and Ostkreuz. The North-South line (S1, S2, S25) connects Gesundbrunnen with Südkreuz/Schöneberg. None of these lines suddenly turns off within the city center and all stops are served by all trains. Please, note that (aside from the North-South line) all local trains run aboveground. Tickets are available on the train platforms and must be validated before entering the train.
  • Subway (U): These lines interconnect the different areas of downtown Berlin and mostly run in the underground. Follow the U sign (white U on a blue square) for stations and check-out available lines on the routemap. Tickets are also available on the train platforms and need to be validated before entering the train.

You may change between Bus, Tram, U, and S with the same ticket. Single ride tickets (AB) are valid for up to two hours but do not allow roundtrips. Usually, zones AB will suffice (again: see information on the routemap). There are also options available for day tickets and weekly passes.
