IC2E 2014 Doctoral Symposium
Call for Submissions
Aim and Scope
The IC2E Doctoral Symposium provides a friendly and supportive environment for doctoral students to present and discuss their dissertation research both with their peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from academia and industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice, the symposium will be an excellent opportunity for students to explore issues of academic and research careers, build relationships with other students working in related fields, and practice presenting their research clearly and concisely.
Eligibility
The symposium is open only to active PhD students. Students should be far enough to have a concrete dissertation proposal, outlining the key research challenges they plan to solve, as well as the planned strategies and methodologies. They should also not be planning to finish their dissertation within 6 months of the symposium, so that they would have time to incorporate any feedback and suggestions into their work.
Award
There will be an award to the best student presentation in the symposium.
Submission Requirements
Submissions must be single-author, about the student's dissertation topic, and should include the name of the advisor. Topics of interest are the same as the topics for the main IC2E conference. Submissions should include the following:
- An extended abstract of the student's dissertation research (up to 3 pages) including a discussion of the problem and why it is important, the proposed approach, how it relates to and advances the state of the art, initial results, a timeline, and references. It is also worthwhile to delineate the student's prior work with relevant citations, and include other information that will help the reviewers and the panel better assess the technical contributions and provide more useful suggestions.
- A short biographical sketch (1 page max) including affiliations, research activities, and when the student plans to finish the dissertation work.
The format will follow the same guidelines as that of the main IC2E conference.
Submissions should be done through the following link: http://london.csl.toronto.edu/IC2E14/conferences/ic2e14-doctoral/
Important Dates
Submission: January 31, 2014
Acceptance Notification: February 10, 2014
Symposium: March 10th, 2014
Symposium Format
The symposium will be a one-day event preceding the main IC2E conference consisting of student presentation sessions and a roundtable discussion at the end. Each participant will have time allotted for a short presentation immediately followed by an in-depth and constructive discussion led by the panel. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion in which panelists will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions and advice to the group, including job search and career options.
