China Unicom: Building an On-Demand 5G MEC Platform Beyond Standard with Innovations

5G is a standard-bounded (e.g. 3GPP) tech while the new demands in digital transformation with 5G are different. MEC is the key connection point to link business needs with the carrier's capabilities by the new way of edge computing. There are challenges in balancing the rigid standard while delivering an on-demand MEC platform. China Unicom released its 5G MEC in 2019 and had been keeping it optimized according to business for three years. Currently, it is supporting hundreds of production environments for different vertical industries. Its evolution experienced three stages. From following the standard in stage one, then mixing and leveraging those cloud natures in stage two, and building unique capabilities beyond standard requirements and cloud features with innovations in the last stage. This presentation will go through the demands, challenges, design principles, and deliverables in China Unicom's MEC journey.
